Course Overview

This Law Enforcement Legal Review™ reviews the legal basis for making an arrest or conducting a search.

Examples of typical investigative situations and the current legal principles are presented in the lesson sections.

Recommendations are made for:

  • identifying the different levels of evidence required for arrests, searches, and convictions;
  • determining when facts are sufficient to support a probable cause belief that a person committed a crime or that seizable evidence is at a specific location or on a specific person;
  • identifying the various sources of information to support probable cause beliefs;
  • utilizing legal reasoning by analogy to determine when probable cause levels of proof are sufficient;
  • understanding the different reasons for prosecutor's use of higher standards for filing cases and defending searches at suppression hearings; and
  • protecting yourself from liability in these situations.
