Course Overview

This issue of the Law Enforcement Legal Review revisits the U.S. Supreme Court's landmark decision that controls law enforcement response to anonymous tips about danger.

The case is analyzed, and the current law is reviewed regarding the conduct of investigatory stops and protective frisks after receiving anonymous tips about dangerous criminal activity.

Recommendations are made for:

  • effectively investigating suspicious situations that are reported by anonymous callers,
  • analyzing information reported by anonymous callers and gathering sufficient evidence to conduct legal investigatory stops,
  • ensuring officer safety during all investigatory stops,
  • determining when a legal protective frisk can be made,
  • conducting legal protective frisks, and
  • ensuring that all items found during protective frisks will be admissible.
