Course Overview

This issue of the Law Enforcement Legal Review revisits the U.S. Supreme Court's landmark decision concerning pat-downs during traffic stops.

The case is analyzed, and the current law is reviewed regarding conducting investigatory stops of vehicles, interacting with drivers and passengers during vehicle stops, and conducting protective frisks.

Recommendations are made for:

  • effectively conducting investigatory (traffic) stops,
  • ordering drivers and passengers to exit or remain inside vehicles,
  • ensuring officer safety during all investigatory stops,
  • determining when a legal protective frisk can be made, and
  • conducting legal protective frisks.
